🍎Today’s Lesson is on the origin of Thanksgiving and the beginning of the American Spirit. Do some reading on your own or watch a documentary so you can have an age appropriate discussion this week, in the car, in the kitchen or around the table with your children about how horrible life in England was which prompted the Pilgrims to leave their homeland for a somewhat unknown destiny. Unless one was nobility, royalty or in the favor of the monarch, life was rough.
Although it was initially religious freedom they were seeking, life for the average citizen was difficult. Your land or your possession could be taken and there was little you could do. For the Pilgrims (& others) it was worth a long passage on a rough cargo ship & unsure future to ‘get out of Dodge.” That experience was the inception of the American Spirit and eventually the America Dream. The American Spirit is that attitude to set sail on uncharted waters to unknown territories, the spirit to take on the most powerful military and country in the world at the time, the British Empire, and win to gain independence to form a new nation.
Through out history, Americans have set the bar high and taken on unimaginable tasks like putting the automobile on the road, take to flight, scaled the cliffs of Normandy to help free Europe from an evil regime. The American Spirit can be described as the desire to do things right, to lend a helping hand and to not give up. It can be seen in every aspect of American life. Americans raise good responsible children, they look out for their neighbor, they come to the rescue of others and they are willing to give a hand up. We are not perfect, however, we learn from our mistakes. We look back on the journey those first Pilgrims took and we are grateful for their long treacherous voyage that make it possible for us to say…It’s a Great Day 🇺🇸
