You know, the cookie you always make when asked to bring cookies. It could be a seasonal thing. I have a friend who is known for her Scotcheroos around the holidays. You know, the chocolate and peanuts butter covered Rice Krispies Treats. She has brought them to our house for a Christmas party and they were the most popular dessert and quickly gobbled up. For me, it’s my Peanut Butter cookies with the crisscross fork marks pressed onto the cookies that are originally rolled into 1 inch balls. However, during the Christmas season, it would be the Cutouts (those too can be seasonal as you can cut out different shapes depending on the season...

My friend Lynn makes the BEST Scotcheroos!

Cookies really aren’t trendy. think about the Toll House Cookie recipe. That recipe has been around as long as I can remember. Growing up, everyone thought that THEIR Mom made the BEST. I recall the kids having friends over when our were about age ten. I served Ina Garten’s version made with chocolate chunks-her’s is my favorite chocolate chips/chunk cookie recipe. One of the little girls said,”Mrs. Burau, you cookies are really good, but my Mom’s are my favorite.” I told her that I wasn’t surprised because I felt the same way about my Mom’s. We were invited to a cookout and I took a platter of Ina Garten’s Chocolate Chunk (& walnuts) cookies and they were a hit. With Burgers and Brats and picnic salads and side dishes, classic chocolate chunk cookies were a perfect dessert, nothing to cut, no utensils needed and all though the hostess had little paper plates, a napkins sufficed for most people.

Consider your favorite cookie recipe and try to have all no—perishiable ingredients on hand. Make any perishable ingredients on your regular grocery list, like eggs and butter. If you keep the ingredients on hand, you can always whip them up in a jiffy. OR make a recipe of cookies, make a pan to enjoy now and either freeze the dough so you can easily bake a pan last minute. Or still, make cookies, let them cool and then freeze in freever bags getting out as much air as possible so they don’t get freezer burn, or taste like the freezer.

A cake dome is a nice place to store your cookies so they are easily enjoyed.

By putting a little thought into this, you can very quickly think of a dessert that you know the recipe so well, you have had success with you can have a snack, dessert or dish to take with little effort. I like to keep white paper doilies on hand to put on a platter. If making cookies to have on hand at your house, of course, I like to store them in a cake dome. How nice is that for your kids, grandkids, family or friends to see and enjoy when they are in your kitchen (That makes a nice gift for a new bride or a house warming gift).

You can thank me later. This idea could lead to some great days for you and those you love.

My cutout cookie recipe is in my book, It’s a Great Day To…Gather Around a Table.
