A gal I went to high school with is a voracious reader. At the conclusion of the year, she posted on her FB page, a photo of the books/titles she had read. I saw that and thought, “What a great idea for children too.” In no way, whatsoever, was she bragging or did she mean in in any competitive sense. What she did do was to inspire me to read more complete books. Encourage YOUR children to keep track of the books they read or listen to. Yes, it could be a competition or a game, but more importantly, it allows them to look back over a season or a year and see how much they learned. They could categorize their titles as classics, fiction or non-fiction, etc. As you gather around the table at dinner time, as a family, you can discuss what everyone is reading/listening to and encourage your children to be able to carry on conversations both with their contemporaries and adults. A good conversation starter is, “What have you read lately?” These conversations are informal discussion on plot, theme, characters, setting, etc, all topics for literature class later on in middle/high school/college and allow kiddos to assess what they learned as they read and reflect on what they got out of the book, showing them that learning can be fun & life long, possibly inspiring them to read more…leading to many…Great Days 🍎
