It’s a good quality for a person to have good sense of humor, as life can get real serious at times. It’s something that we have to teach our children. It’s also important to teach our kids that a joke is only a joke if everyone is laughing. Sometimes in groups of children or in a family, there is one child who’s the butt of the jokes. I DO NOT like to see that. Like I said, it’s a good thing to have a good sense of humor, but nobody deserves to be, made fun of. Have you ever been in a situation where a spouse or a child is the butt of a joke? It’s so uncomfortable to be around. These are skills that are taught and learned. I think first and foremost, we teach our children that jokes are only funny when everyone in the group is laughing. If one person is being singled out or unfairly harmed, that’s not good. Teach your kids what a good joke is and teach them the difference between having fun and making fun of someone. If you are the parent or “adult in the room,” call out harmful behavior when you see it. Don’t let kids get by with it. It’s hurtful, and if it isn’t addressed, it can lead to bad feelings over time and bruised self esteem. Let your kids know that it’s ok to stand up for themselves if they are ever in a situation where they are singled out or made fun of in a group. “I didn’t find that funny,” or “You hurt my feelings,” or “Did you mean to hurt my feelings?” Are all ok to say. Sometimes friends need to know when they crossed the line. Also teach your kids that when a friend says they are sorry, you go on and let it go; accept the apology, we all mess up. Kids test limits and at times need to be “reeled in” and if it comes from their friends, it isn’t all bad.
Find some good clean comedians and comedy movies to watch with your children. Laughing is good for us all. Don’t you just love a good belly laugh? With school starting up, take some time out on the weekends to laugh as a family. It could make for some
